For the in-game Note called "The Breach", see The Breach (Note).

Description[]

The Breach refers to a vast, nebulous storm that both exists between universes and links universes together. Though not fully understood, the Breach has proven to be passable, and many individuals have successfully navigated it to enter another universe. However, traveling through the Breach is highly dangerous and can be fatal without some form of protection or means of conveyance, such as a Breach Elevator. Special technology must be developed to be able to observe or travel through it, as it also damages technology as well.[1] Though travelers have claimed to be able to see the Breach with the naked eye, the Breach itself may be invisible, and the effect seen in the sky is a jumbled molecular layer — a collection of random, glitch-like particles that fill the gaps where the Breach ends and another universe begins. [2]

It's described in various ways; Athetos, who later developed methods of traversing it, theorized that the Breach is a mesh that links adjacent universes. Athetos Variant 7 further hypothesized that the visual effect of the Breach which can be seen in the upper areas of Kur and Edin is actually invisible and that "a protective field of microscopic elements covering the frayed ends" is being seen.[2] The Sudrans and Sagiga both described the Breach as a fiery storm descending from the sky.[3][4][5]

Axiom Verge[]

The planet Sudra has a deep history with the Breach, one that is not entirely whole. According to what the Rusalki say, Athetos used the Breach Attractor as part of his plan, surrounding Sudra with Breach and trapping the Rusalki on Sudra as he flooded the planet with his pathogen. The Rusalki cannot pass through the Breach[6], and they tell Trace that Athetos is keeping them there until he can destroy them, along with the rest of the Worldstream.[7] Athetos tells a similar story, that he's keeping the Rusalki trapped on Sudra, but claims that it was the Sudrans were the ones who surrounded the planet with Breach, saying that they were isolationist and trying to keep the outside world away.[8] However, according to Sudran records, the Breach surrounded Sudra after a High Priestess used the Breach Attractor to pull the Breach in around the planet, attempting to either kill or impair the Rusalki.[3]

Trace's mission, as dictated by the Rusalki, is to defeat Athetos so that the Breach Attractor can be turned off and the Rusalki can be freed.[7]

Breach is like storm - deadly, cannot be pass.

Axiom Verge 2[]

In Axiom Verge 2, Indra is able to see the Breach as more than a link between worlds, rather, a physical realm in and of itself. Her drone is able to pass through small gaps in reality in order to enter the Breach, utilizing it to travel between areas that are usually inaccessible.

On Kiengir, the Breach is mentioned in several notes as a storm descending from the sky in bursts of fire, or as a great flood overtaking the land.[4] As seen in notes, as well as gameplay, the Breach houses demons known to the Sagiga as Udug.[9] At some point in Kiengir's history, storms opened up in the sky to allow the Udug to pass through the Breach and enter the world of Kiengir. They seemed to be complacent with the Sagiga's presence, but at some point, the Lamassu decided to send the Sagiga to war and vanquish the Udug. This caused the Udug to begin targetting the Sagiga, actively hunting them down. After utilizing upstream technology for the purpose of defeating the Udug, the lattices between worlds began to shift and collide, the Breach slowly descending on the Worldstream.[10] This can be seen in the breach portals presumably honored by the Sagiga, put onto pedestals.

It is possible the Sagiga traveled through the Breach[11], travelling to a place they called Engur, a former home of the Udug.[12] It was described as being a great watery cavern. Given its name, it's possible that this was Absu, a land on Sudra.[13]
