Description[]

Sudra is the planet where the events of Axiom Verge take place, and native home to the Sudrans.

Sudra's atmosphere is much like that of Earth. Trace can breathe the air on Sudra without any technological aid and there is moisture found in Sudra's atmosphere, as snow can be seen falling in the open air of Kur. Plant life and animal life alike are both found on Sudra, such as trees, grasses, bugs, snails, and various other creatures. (See the Bestiary for a full list of creatures found on Sudra)

History[]

See: Sudran (Race)#History

Little is known about Sudran society and its history. Hundreds of years before the events of Axiom Verge, Sudra was a gateway world between universes, a port to civilizations with advanced technologies. The Rusalki describe that the world itself is designed to keep the Breach under control.[1] At some point, perhaps gradually, the Sudrans' descendants grew less and less scientifically literate. As a result, their former port world experienced a collapse and the gateway was closed. Sudra fell into a state of isolation as a result of the Sudrans' lack of scientific understanding, now holding their technology with deep religious significance. They referred to their ancient technology as the Old Machines, deeply fearing such things.[2] It is unknown if the machines were feared indiscriminately, or if certain ones were seen as less significant.

Most notably, the prime Trace, along with his colleague Elizabeth Hammond, discovered Sudra's incredible technology and used a Rebirth Chamber to completely heal him of injuries sustained from the lab explosion back on Earth, restoring his sight and mobility. For some time, Trace explored Sudra and made contact with its inhabitants. According to one of his records, Trace eventually decided that the Sudran technology is too dangerous to bring back to Earth, believing it to be connected to the collapse of Sudra's civilization and not wanting to bring similar havoc on Earth. He was dismayed by how the Sudrans had become isolationist, shunning all outsiders and halting all technological advancement. They no longer permitted travel between worlds and saw the Breach as a barrier to shut them off from the outside universe.[3][4] Some Sudran records contradict this, however, stating that the Breach was summoned as a way to combat the Rusalki.[5] After his exploration, Trace, accompanied, attempted to traverse the Breach and go upstream, aiming to go to the next upstream filter and whatever worlds lay beyond, likely for scientific exploration. It is unknown when he returned to Sudra.

At some point, the Rusalki appeared on Sudra, dwelling in the skies. They are observed to have battled in the sky before a High Priestess summoned the Breach, injuring the Rusalki and leaving them vulnerable to being taken into the custody of the Sudran priesthood.[5] After this, a plague emerged on Sudra, suspected to be released by an intruder commandeering the Breach Attractor.[6] The Sudrans would not recover from this, and would be wiped out before the events of Axiom Verge take place. Athetos later claims that he was the one who released the pathogen on Sudra, agreeing with the Rusalki.[3]

The Emergence[]

Main article: The Emergence

The Kazakhs from Hammond's Antarctic base explore the breach and then discover a different planet pass the branch, which they dub "The Emergence". While it is never directly referenced by the Kazakhs or other text, The Emergence has similar creatures, monuments, and color hues when compared to Sudra.
